We’ve all felt it! So what are our best options when it comes to alleviating chronic pain?!?! Well interestingly enough… a study that as published in **July 2003 in the Journal of Spine** shows that Chiropractic is five times better at relieving pain than Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID). For example Voltaren, Advil and Ibuprofen. The study itself showed that not only does Chiropractic help assist pain relief, but it also improves overall health. The study was a Randomized Clinical Trial, comparing Chiropractic to both Pain Relief Medication & Acupuncture. **The highlights of the study are as follows:** - It assessed the long-term benefits of medication, needle acupuncture & spinal adjustment as exclusive & standardize treatment regimes in patients with chronic (greater than 13 weeks) spinal pain syndromes. - 115 patients were originally randomized treatment during the nine-week treatment period. They were followed up & assessed again 1 year later. - Within 9 weeks of treatment, 27.3% of the patients getting Chiropractic adjustments reported having no symptoms compared with only 9.4% of the Acupuncture group & 5% of the group getting medication. - None of the subjects receiving Chiropractic or Acupuncture reported suffering from any adverse events from the treatment, However, 6.1% of the subjects treated with NSAIDS (medication) reported suffering an adverse events. - The most interesting statistics recorded the percentages of people who reported an improvement of overall health status beyond just pain relief. The percentage of patients experiencing better overall health were as follows: - è 18% for the subjects treated with NSAIDS, 15% for the subjects treated with Acupuncture, and 47% for the subjects receiving Chiropractic Care. In a world that is taught to quickly turn to medications for pain relief, it is important to note that more patients (6.1%) experienced adverse effects from drugs, rather than recovering from their spinal complaints (5%). **Chiropractic has always advocated more benefits than simple pain relief, and studies like this help to put the nails in that coffin of truth.** Chiropractors strive to educate the public on its benefits beyond just pain relief. This study, which largely focused on the effects of treatment on chronic spinal pain, also helped to prove that improvement of the nervous system translates into a body empowered to improve overall health If you or anyone you know experiences chronic pain, please speak to Andrew or Veronika **Categories:** Chiropractic, Healthcare, Spinal Health **Tags:** CAA, Chiropractic, Gonstead, Healthcare, Healthier You, Natural Therapy, Pain Relievers, Spinal Health, Weve Got Your Back --- ### [SPRING CLEANING!](http://thechiropractor.com.au/spring-cleaning/) **Published:** November 15, 2018 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** Summer is on its way! The weather’s getting warmer, flowers are blooming and what better way to celebrate the start of the season than with a little bit of spring cleaning! Whether it’s the dreaded weekly housework or a big clean out, aches, pains and strains on our spine can easily occur from these basic chores. In 2015, 3.7 million Australians experienced lower back pain,\[1\] which can be caused from a number of factors, including simple everyday activities. The average Australian woman for example can spend up to 30 hours a week on housework, putting enormous pressure on her body, especially her spine\[2\]. Activities like vacuuming, mopping, washing windows, reaching for cobwebs and even washing dishes can add extra strain on the spine because of our habit of bending at the waist or having poor posture while performing repetitive movements. When we haven’t been doing these types of movements for a while, it may leave us vulnerable to injury. Giving up housework altogether may not be the best option (although we wish it was), so here are a few tips to maintain a healthy spine for this cleaning season and beyond: Warmup – Warming up your back with a little walk or starting with smaller tasks may help reduce injury. Avoid starting these big cleaning jobs early in the morning, allowing your body to be more flexible to address the tasks. Taking regular breaks as well can help by avoiding constant strain on your spine. Straighten Up – Try to stand up straight when doing activities where you might normally hunch over, like vacuuming or mopping. Attempt these activities with your legs in a lunge position, while keeping your spine straight which may help prevent aches and improve your posture. Share the load – Reduce strain on your neck and back while doing the dishes by opening up the cupboard doors under the sink and placing a foot inside. This should help you squat lower, and straighten up your spine. Also, bend your knees when lifting. By lifting with your leg muscles (not your low back muscles only) you can reduce the strain on your spine, and likely get the cleaning done quicker! Visiting your local ACA chiropractor can help if you have existing pains by assessing your movement and function, then recommend appropriate care for you. Care options can include specific chiropractic adjustments, targeted stretches, and exercises to help strengthen your muscles over the long term. Australian chiropractors see up to 300,000 people each week, so chiropractic care may be a great option for you to help keep your spine moving well too. Those aged over 65 are termed ‘older Australians’ and while this demographic currently makes up 15% of the population, this looks to increase to 22% by 2056.\[1\] As we age, we can expect gradual changes in our bodies. Older Australians are generally quite healthy and enjoy good quality of life but the data shows that as we age, we are more likely to experience musculoskeletal issues. It is not uncommon to experience aches and pains but it is important to distinguish between natural changes in the body resulting from old age and pain that is not natural and could be prevented. The spine changes as we get older. It can lose thickness and elasticity, meaning that we are less able to withstand normal day-to-day strain and can become more vulnerable to both chronic and acute injuries.\[2\] It is never too late to start living an active lifestyle and enjoying the benefits. Here are some tips that may help you achieve a healthier, stronger body that can withstand old age. --- - **Get Active** Regardless of age, a sedentary lifestyle can be harmful to musculoskeletal health and overall well-being. Staying active and incorporating exercise into your daily routine can help increase flexibility and mobility. In addition to the physical benefits, exercising can also have a profound impact on mental health and general outlook on life. Only one in three older Australians report being sufficiently active and 72% are overweight or obese.\[1\] This shows the need for older Australians to be more active and to assess their nutrition. Low-impact exercises such as walking or swimming may be a good way to get started. Regular exercise offers great benefits including better stability, reduced inflammation, improved mobility and much more. Joining group-based activities are also a great option – they offer a chance to socialise, provide motivation and it’s also more fun to exercise with a group! Before beginning any kind of exercise routine, it is important to seek advice from an [ACA chiropractor](https://chiropractors.asn.au/home/locate-a-chiropractor/basicsearch)or other healthcare professional to devise an exercise plan suited to your ability. Whether it’s a short stroll, a long walk or an exercise program approved by a healthcare professional, staying active can help you stay healthier for longer. --- - **Be mindful of your posture** Don’t disregard the importance of good posture – it keeps the body aligned and helps avoid excessive strain on ligaments and muscles. Good posture can help improve mobility, spinal health and quality of life. It is never too late to correct poor posture habits. Make it a priority to assess and correct your posture as you go about your day. Rather than slouching or hunching, try your best to keep your spine in a neutral position. It is also advisable to avoid sitting or standing in the same position for long periods. It can be difficult to be mindful of your posture all the time so it may be a good idea to set alarms on your mobile phone to remind you. You can also use the [Straighten Up (Australia) app](https://chiropractors.asn.au/straighten-up-app) to set posture reminders and receive notifications about sitting right, stretching, taking breaks, drinking water and improving your posture. --- - **Start stretching** Regular stretching can help maintain joint flexibility, improve stability and may also help relieve stiff muscles. It can also help with increasing range of motion but it is important to perform stretches correctly. Consult a healthcare professional to gain a better understanding of how to perform stretches correctly and to find out which stretches are best for you. Take extra care when doing stretches that may require balancing and be sure to modify stretches to suit your ability level. --- - **Consult Andrew or Veronika** If you suffer from chronic back pain, spinal health issues, come in and ask Andrew or Veronika about exercise programs or preventative measures that may help you with your spinal health. Get your spine in line and feeling fine. --- **‘Positive Ageing’ is the theme for the [ACA Annual Conference](https://www.caaannualconference.com.au/) this year. The average Australian spends 2 hours and 25 minutes a day watching television.1 That’s a long time in one position and it can be hazardous to your health. Most of the time, when people watch TV, they are either slouching or lying in ways that put strain on their shoulders, back, or hips. Unwinding in front of the television shouldn’t feel like work but it also shouldn’t leave you feeling miserable the next day (which can happen if your body is not properly aligned). Here are a few tips that you can do to keep your spine happy while watching television: - Pay attention to your posture – sitting up straight may not feel comfortable at first but overtime you’ll be able to maintain good posture as a habit. Keep your shoulders and back relaxed, and avoid tilting your head forward, backwards or sideways. - Take a break – a great way to remember to move is by getting off the couch and walking around during commercial breaks. - Reduce sitting time – you can make television time productive by doing household chores such as ironing or folding clothes while watching your favourite series. Chiro Can Help If you are already experiencing the side effects of poor posture and prolonged sitting (pain, headaches or stiffness), it is advisable to visit your local CAA chiropractor or other healthcare professional to see how they can help you improve your quality of life. Your chiropractor can provide advice on self-care, depending on your condition and its severity. Research has shown that chiropractic care can help patients who suffer with back pain. In fact, a systematic review of articles published between 2009 and 2014 concluded that “the evidence supports that doctors of chiropractic are well-suited to diagnose, treat, co-manager, and manage the treatment of patients with low back pain disorders”.2 Visit The Chiropractor and ask Andrew or Veronika about how you can improve your spinal health 🙂 For more information on maintaining a healthy spine, please visit the website of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) at www.chiropractors.asn.au --- \[1\] Digital in 2017:ANZ and Pacific, 2017, We are Social & Hootsuite \[2\] Globe G et al, 2015, Clinical Practice Guideline: Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain **Categories:** Spinal Health **Tags:** back pain, CAA, Chiropractic, Gonstead, Health Care, Spinal Health, The Chiropractor --- ### [Put A Little Spring Into Your Step!](http://thechiropractor.com.au/put-a-little-spring-into-your-step/) **Published:** September 20, 2018 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** **Spring has certainly sprung! And we love the fabulous weather 🙂** So now is the perfect time to take advantage of the warmer weather and extra hours of daylight by putting on those joggers and heading outside for a walk. In addition to improving your overall health these are some of the other benefits achieved by walking: - It is inexpensive! No gym membership fees required here, this is an activity that almost everyone can participate in at a time and pace which suits your lifestyle best - Walking helps improve your posture. Many of us spend countless hours at our desk and on our mobile phones, creating issues like ‘text neck’ caused from the crouching position. Walking helps to strengthen the spine and maintain a natural upright position - The motion of walking also helps to rehydrate spinal discs. Through everyday movement, the pressure on our spinal discs causes the squeezing out of the discs water, and walking helps to allow for a higher flow of circulation, resulting in increased circulation of water to the discs. - Continual walking helps create circulation to the spine. The increased blood flow helps bring the body into balance increasing and improving stamina and even lowering blood pressure! - Helps increase mobility and flexibility. Being a low impact exercise, the movement of muscles help to relieve tension which can build up in the lower back area - Combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, walking can assist with weight loss. Through losing weight, additional pressure on the spine and muscles becomes reduced. - A great way to get social! Why not grab some friends and create a regular walking date? Having a consistent time reserved for walking with others is a great way to stay motivated, have a laugh and get fit all at the same time. Not only is walking a great way to get active and improve both your mental and physical wellbeing, it is also a simple way that you can look after your spinal health. The principles that chiropractic is based on aren’t new. In fact the ancient Greeks and other early civilisations used spinal adjustments as a form of healthcare. These principles were formed into a distinct approach to healthcare in 1895 in America by a man named Daniel David Palmer – D. D. Palmer. He opened a school two years later and the profession began to flourish and gradually spread around the world. There are now approximately 100,000 chiropractors worldwide with over 40 chiropractic schools in 16 countries. With the main focus of chiropractic being on the spine, many people think chiropractors can only help with problems such as back pain, neck pain and headaches. And while it’s true that chiropractors can often help people with pain, there is so much more to chiropractic than just treating pain. Chiropractic care is really about total health and wellbeing. It’s about helping people to feel great, and get the most out of life by functioning at their optimal potential. --- The focus of chiropractors is on correcting dysfunctions in the musculoskeletal and nervous system, and pain relief. Chiropractors work towards restoring and maintaining normal spinal function, and encourage patients to make the necessary lifestyle choices to achieve this. Chiropractors use a variety of non-surgical techniques such as spinal adjustments and manual therapy to address spinal health issues. They offer a drug-free, hands-on approach to healthcare and work towards restoring and maintaining normal spinal function without surgery or medication. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and they are qualified to advise patients on exercises, nutrition and lifestyle changes. Chiropractors work with other healthcare providers where needed. Australian chiropractors are highly qualified healthcare professionals who study at university for a minimum of five years. They are also government registered and government regulated. Like all other registered healthcare providers, chiropractors must adhere to National Law and profession specific codes of conduct and guidelines. A chiropractor’s education never ends. All chiropractors must undertake continuing professional development courses to refresh and advance their skills. This means chiropractors are constantly learning, keeping up-to-date with the latest research. Visit your local ACA chiropractor for more information on how they can help improve your quality of life. --- A great video to watch is Heidi Haavik’s – The Beginners Guide to Chiropractic, which you can view via the link below or on our website in the About Chiropractic section - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiF5YLwxFs ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiF5YLwxFs) Or if you are more of a reader, then have a go of Heidi Haavik’s – “The Reality Check”. Palmer). Your spine is not a thing to waste, so we have given you a few ways you can improve your spinal health! **1. Regular Exercise –** Daily exercise is an overall bonus to health, it makes you feel and look good. For your spinal health, a study carried out showed that 90% of individuals who incorporate exercise into their daily lives, it drastically helps their posture. The majority of them also, had improved core stability over several weeks. How’s that for GREAT?!? **2. Do Some Spinal Stretches –** Spinal stretches are great as they help stabilise the spine. One example is the ‘Tilting Star’, which includes standing in a Star position & slowly stretching one arm overhead, whilst slowly bending the spine to the opposite side, with your other hand down your thigh. Making sure to breath in and out as you stretch. There are other great exercises, for both Adults & Kids. So check out the “Straighten Up ” App or website on the Chiropractic Association of Australia. It will only take 3 MINUTES Australia, so go on & help your back! **3. Support Your Back When Heavy Lifting –** We all try to carry too many bags to try and save time, but when you cause a strained muscle or back injury, the question you have to ask yourself is….. IS THE TIME YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE REALLY WORTH IT WHEN YOU CAUSING MORE PAIN & ARE DAMAGING YOUR SPINAL HEALTH??? So in order to avoid this from happening Australia, when lifting heavy objects, it is important to use the correct lifting technique. Always make sure to bend your knees and keep your back in a neutral position. Lift the object slowly & bring it towards your chest. Try to AVOID any twisting or slowing when lowering & lifting. **4. Sleep In Comfort –** Sleep is the body’s way of resting and rejuvenating. It is an important time for the body, so if we do not sleep properly, we can have a negative impact on your spinal health. Generally sleeping on your back or on your side is best because it supports the natural curvature of the spine better. If you sleep on your side, make sure to have a slight bend in your knees to provide alignment. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as this can cause problems to your spine. You may want to invest in a pillow in order to remove strain on your neck when sleeping, which you can do at The Chiropractor by either Andrew or Veronika. **5. Improve Your Posture-** Our backs are not designed to sit in one position for a very long time. It has actually been recorded that low back pain is the THIRD most common reason for time off work….. That is not good at all!!!!!! We need to move around and changes positions because when we are immobile, we become sedentary and that increases spinal strain and our overall health. So take note of your posture. When you are at work, customise your work station for you. Take regular breaks, every 30minutes, just a 1-2 minute breather and a stretch. It will vastly improve your posture and your spine will be forever grateful. **TREASURE YOUR SPINE, IT IS THERE TO SUPPORT YOU!!!!!** References 1. It’s impossible to not smile when this song plays. This, combined with the other habits below, set the tone for a productive, happy and healthy day. **1. Drink a Glass of Water as Soon as You Wake Up** This re hydrates your body, revs up your digestive system, and gets things flowing. You may notice positive changes like clearer skin and better digestion. Bonus points if you add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or a teaspoon with some ginger and raw honey. This really stimulates the digestive system and removes toxins from the body. **2. Do Not Check Your Email or Phone For At Least An Hour** Do you sleep with your cell phone next to you and grab for it first thing when you wake? This is not a good habit. If you choose to resist the temptation to check your email and Facebook feed until at least an hour after waking up, you’ll find that your mind is more clear, focused and happy. **3. Think of One Thing for Which You Have Gratitude** This sets the stage for positive reinforcement throughout the day. If you come up with three or five things even better. **4. Step Outside and Take a Deep Breath** Fill your lungs with fresh air, even if it’s cold outside. This only takes 10 seconds! Slow and deep breathing is so important for individuals. It reminds you that you are alive and breathing. It is also way of nourishing the body and reminding it that we care, particularly when we are stressed or have some major tension. **5. Move Your Body** You don’t necessarily have to do an intense workout before breakfast, but moving your body even a little is a great way to get the blood flowing and shake the body into wake-up mode. Simply doing a few stretches is a great option. Or turn on your favourite song and dance like no one is watching. **6. Take Time to Eat a Healthy Breakfast** Rather than reaching for a box of cereal, focus on getting real foods in your body. Eggs, soaked oats, and smoothies are all great options. (And they really don’t take that much time to prepare.) Try it out. Make sure you’re spending the time focusing on eating and not getting distracted by your phone or other items. **7. Say Your Affirmations** Look into the mirror and say something positive to yourself. Some ideas: I radiate beauty, confidence and grace. Every cell in my body is healthy and vibrant. I feel great when I take care of myself. --- Every little bit makes a difference. So are you up for the challenge of incorporating these healthy habits? What about you? What does it mean to be “sleep deprived”? The broad definition of sleep deprivation is “the condition that occurs if you don’t get enough sleep.” The amount of hours for a good sleep is usually about 7–9 hours per night for adults (and even more for children and teens). --- **Is Sleep Deprivation an Epidemic Today?** Getting enough sleep is a vital, dynamic part of a healthy lifestyle. The body needs adequate rest each night for a variety of reasons, including: • fighting illnesses • strengthening the immune system • repairing damaged tissues • digestion • detoxification • hormonal balance • maintaining cognitive health **Causes of Sleep Deprivation** • A disorder that disrupts sleep (thyroid, pain, acid reflux or sleep apnea). • A demanding, busy schedule. This can include lots of time commuting and family obligations. • High amounts of stress. • Effects of certain medications or stimulants. • Alcohol consumption or using other stimulants. • Eating a poor diet that can lead to blood sugar fluctuations. • Eating too close to bedtime, or not eating enough with dinner/later in the day • Pregnancy and experiencing other hormonal changes. **6 Natural Treatments for Sleep Deprivation** 1. Manage Stress : Some simple ways of dealing with stress in one’s life include practicing yoga, meditation, deep breathing, stretching or even playing an instrument. 2. Avoid Blue Light at Night: try to minimise the use of your phone, computer & TV at night and instead find yourself a book that you can indulge yourself in. 3. Increase Exposure to Natural Light During the Day: In order to regulate your body clock, it is important to get enough natural light for the production of Vitamin D, as well as the regulation of melatonin which helps the body sleep. 4. Exercise: Keeping active daily is very important. At least 30 – 60 minutes a day, keeps the body active, promotes better sleep, which improves your overall health. 5. Adjust Your Diet: Eating a wide variety of foods, including fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, raw dairy, protein (e.g. salmon or beef). Eating approximately 4-5 times a day is recommended as it increases an individual’s metabolism. Including a protein in your snack helps to keep you fuller for longer. Also trying not to snack after dinner time, particularly foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates. 6. Create a “Bedtime Routine”: Creating a routine is important for good sleep hygiene when the body is exhausted. Keeping your room cooler at night, can initiate sleepiness. Also some people may find it helpful to journal before bedtime, drink herbal teas such as chamomile, stretching or even taking a warm shower. Due to a high amount of sedentary workers, there is an increasing risk in chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, all from inactive living. We spend most of our working days sitting at our desks or in meetings. Even the commute to and from work is spent in a seat. When at home, more often than not, we’re switching between a smartphone, laptop or TV. So, it is no surprise that a growing number of Australians are suffering from back problems and other health issues associated with a sedentary lifestyle and poor posture. While sitting down for long periods at work cannot be entirely avoided, there are small steps we can take to improve our posture and incorporate exercise in our daily routine, cultivating good habits for optimal spinal health. **Every Little Helps** It can be daunting to overhaul your lifestyle but the good news is that you don’t have to. Making little changes in your daily routine is a sustainable way to improve your health in the long run. Prevention is certainly better than cure and cultivating good habits is a great place to start. For example, you could: - Get off at an earlier stop or park further away from the office; - Take the stairs instead of the lift; or - Try to stand up whenever possible, e.g. when on the phone or talking to colleagues. If you have a height adjustable desk, try to stand as much as possible when you are working. If your workplace does not offer standing desks, it may be a good idea to request one. Improving your posture, incorporating stretching into your daily routine and staying active can prove beneficial for your spinal health and overall well-being. **Assess and Correct** Being aware of things which may be impacting your health and correcting these can help improve your spinal health. This is especially important when it comes to your posture. Pay attention to the way you sit at work – avoid hunching or slouching at your desk. Sit back in your chair and make sure your back is well-supported by the chair. Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips and keep your feet flat on the floor. Also, take a moment to assess your office desk. Are there any elements that are stressing or straining your body? Keep the mouse and telephone within easy reach so you don’t have to stretch to reach them. Adjust your computer screen so that your neck is in a neutral position and be mindful of your posture while sitting. **Take a Break** Our spines are not designed to be stationary for long periods. Taking a break from your seat and screen every so often is important. Try to avoid sitting in the same position for longer than 30 minutes and walk around whenever possible. The simple act of getting up and walking around your desk can have a profound effect on how you feel. It is easy to forget to take a break when we are busy at work. So, set an alarm on your phone to remind you or use the reminders on the [Straighten Up (Australia)](https://chiropractors.asn.au/straighten-up-app) app. **Make Time to Exercise** Australia’s Department of Health recognises that being physically active and limiting sedentary behaviour is vital for good health and well-being.\[1\] The World Health Organisation recommends that adults aged 18-64 years should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic, physical activity throughout the week. Many of us are not able to meet this target even with the best intentions. The thought of exercising after a long day’s work may not sound particularly enticing but it is important to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. This could be swimming, cycling, walking the dog or dancing. If it is an activity you enjoy, you’re more likely to stick with it. **Digital Detox** When you get back home from the office, try not to sit in front of the TV or browse your phone. So here’s a few travel tips to make sure you and your spine keep well these holidays!!! **Travelling by car or bus** 1. Take regular stretch breaks at least every 1 – 2 hours. 2. Tuck in your chin & roll your shoulders back every hour to loosen tight muscles. 3. Use back support, such as a small, rolled towel. Alternate behind the back & then between the shoulders. 4. Sit upright with your head back before setting the position of your mirrors. This will remind you not to slouch. 5. Stay well hydrated, sip water often. 6. Pillows are light, so take a supportive pillow strapped to your case. Put your seat upright & ensure your tailbone is as far back in the seat as it can be, with shoulders and head as supported as possible by the seat. **Travelling by plane** 1. Where possible, sit on the aisle to make it easier to regularly stretch and walk during the flight. 2. Use a rolled up garment or small cushion as a spinal support, to maintain the natural shape of the spine. 3. Be careful lifting suitcases. Bend with your knees, not your back. 4. Regularly roll your ankles in circles and point then flex your feet. 5. Stretch at least every 1 – 2 hours, and always stretch after sleeping. 6. Stay well hydrated, sip water often. 7. Place a supportive pillow inside your luggage or take an inflatable travel pillow. 8. Before take-off, set your watch to the time zone of your destination, then eat, drink & sleep in alignment with this time during the flight to adjust to it. **Sleeping in a unfamiliar bed** 1. Sleep on your back or side as much as possible, avoid sleeping on your stomach! 2. If the bed is ‘saggy’, consider putting the mattress on the floor. 3. Use a ceiling fan instead of air-conditioning where possible to avoid cold blasts of air on your neck or back. 4. Compensate for dips in the mattress by placing a small, soft towel under your side. 5. Always stretch after sleeping. 6. Stay well hydrated, sip water often. **Reference** - https://chiropractors.asn.au/component/k2/item/137-travel-tips-for-the-holidays **Categories:** Healthcare **Tags:** CAA, Healthcare, Holidays, Spinal Health, Straighten Up Australia, The Chiropractor, Travel Tips --- ### [Does Having Your Spine Checked Help in the Long - Term?](http://thechiropractor.com.au/does-having-your-spine-checked-help-in-the-long-term/) **Published:** June 26, 2018 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** **Does Spinal Manipulation Therapy (adjustment) for Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain Result in Better Long-Term Outcome?** The answer is …. YES A controlled study done by researchers at the University of Mansoura, published in Spine Journal 2011 showed that people who continued spinal care after initial treatment phase had improvements in both pain & functional scales. Whereas, those individuals that stopped care returned to similar levels of pain & dysfunction after 10 months, much like those in the control group. If you have a look at the Visual Diagram below, you will see the comparison between the Control Group, the Non-Maintained SMT group & the Maintained SMT Group. Our bodies become mentally and physically drained. So we quite often just want to snuggle up in our blankets, drink tea and lounge around. This is the time when our bodies are susceptible to the winter nasties. So keeping proactive and ensuring our health and wellness is on top of its game is important. **So here are 10 tips for keeping up your Winter Wellness & keeping out those nasty bugs!!** --- **1. Keep Hydrated** – Quite often when the weather is cooler, we forget to hydrate. It seems unappealing due to the weather outside. However, our bodies are made up most of water, so when you turn on the aircon or the heater, this is when our bodies need it the most. So make sure to have at least 6 – 8 glasses of water a day. If it’s too cold, add some boiling water or lemon ( a natural antioxidant ) to warm it up! **2. Rest Up & Rejuvenate –** There’s nothing more important than getting adequate, good quality sleep at night, especially in winter. When we are run down, were more susceptible to getting sick. Sleep releases melatonin which rejuvenates the body and supports the immune system. *So aim for a good 7-8 hours of sleep!* Also, before bed allow yourself time to switch off from technology and your surroundings in order to settle down and ensure that good night sleep. A great tip from Ayuverdic Medicine, if you suffer from restless nights is to get some Natural Sesame Oil, warm up about half a teaspoon & massage it on the bottom of your feet. It does wonders! **3. Don’t Stop Exercise! –** Don’t let your excuses or the weather get in the way of your wellness! It’s a fact that exercise helps individuals, releasing those natural chemicals, such as endorphins, that boost our mood. Doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day will also help flush that bacteria and unwanted waste from the body, reducing the chance of cough or cold. If it’s too cold outside or you’re not motivated, find a friend and go to a gym, indoor pool or yoga. **4. Save Your Skin –** It is the largest organ in the body, and acts as a protective layer. Just because there is less sun, doesn’t mean we should forget about our skin. In fact we should look out for it more. As it the winter months hit, the cool air, wind and even heat can dry out our skin. Our skin is there for us, so make sure to look out for it. Using natural moisturisers such as Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil or Honey are great. **5. Eat For The Season –** Winter is the season where the body is the strongest and requires more food to fuel the body in order to remain well and healthy. We naturally crave heartier foods, more rich in nutrients and bigger portions overall. That way we feel stronger in order to survive the colder months. Examples of winter foods include brown rice, seasonal fruits (e.g. berries, apples & oranges), vegetables ( e.g. carrots, broccoli, kale, parsnip, pumpkin, onions) and Natural Seasonings (oil, garlic, ginger, flax seed). These are all great examples of foods to eat in winter to warm up the body keep up one’s vitality and energy. **6. Boost Your Immunity –** Whilst it is crucial to eat well, reaching out for those super foods will help you strengthen your immune system. Olive leaf extract is a great herbal remedy that contains oleuropein, which prevents coughs, sore throats & nasal congestion. Garlic, a mineral high in sulphur used for years, helps to fight infection. Blueberries, which are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A and Turmeric, a great antioxidant & anti-inflammatory, which aids digestion, fights off colds is also another good option in winter. A great tip in winter, if you’re under the weather, is to warm up some Turmeric with milk. Remember, this is the time to look out for yourself, prevent the nasties! **7. Wash Your Hands –** We always say it, but sometimes forget it. However it is really important to wash your hands as touching one another is quite often one of the most common ways of spreading germs. So don’t forget to wash your hands regularly with soap, most importantly when you’ve been to the bathroom or before you eat. It’s quite simple and it reduces infection and illness from the spread of bacteria. We just want you to be well. **8. Take Probiotics –** WANT TO KEEP YOUR GUT WELL? If you want to keep your body in order, look out for some probiotics. They help your gut, which supports your immune system, all the while fighting off cold and flu. When you have a diet that is high in fibre, this creates an environment for good bacteria to thrive. Types of probiotics that you can take include kefir yoghurt, kombucha or fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, miso, kimchi). **9. Stock Up On Vitamin C –** It’s a classic fighter of the winter cold. Known as a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C helps the body regenerate scar tissue and burns, regulating the immune system to optimum function. As the body can not produce its own Vitamin C it is important that we substitute it within our diets. A lack of Vitamin C can cause scurvy, which cause symptoms such as fatigue, anemia, dryness & bruising, something we don’t want. So where can we get it? Well sources of Vitamin C can be found in oranges, strawberries, mangoes, capsicum, broccoli, grapefruit, pumpkin and spinach. Just remember it is best eaten in its raw form, because the more you cook it, the more you lose the Vitamins. Last but not least …. **10. Keep Yourself Warm –** Protect the body from getting that nasty chill. It’s important that we help ourselves from that cool air, so pop a beanie on or scarf around your neck to add some warmth. A little extra protection will help the body retain heat and reduce your chances of catching that cold you want to steer clear from. **References** - https://www.healthylife.com.au/media/wysiwyg/winter\_wellness\_guide\_2018.pdf - http://acupunctureandbeautycentre.com.au/10-tips-to-winter-wellness **Categories:** Healthcare **Tags:** CAA, Cold & Flu Season, Healthcare, Healthy Life, Nutrition, The Chiropractor, Winter, Winter Wellness --- ### [It's Time to Straighten Up!](http://thechiropractor.com.au/time-to-straighten-up/) **Published:** June 14, 2018 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** Our increasingly sedentary lifestyles mean that more and more of us are suffering from poor health and spinal health issues. Why not take advantage of the extra free time to walk around and explore your local area, play some sport or even simply walk the dog? Whether catching up on your favourite series, heading on a road trip or lazing by the beach – sitting for long periods without a break can affect your postural health, even when you exercise regularly. When you sit for too long and too often, the natural curve in your back deteriorates, increasing pressure in your back and weakening the core stabilising muscles in your back. To get up and go for a walk is a simple yet fantastic way to boost your activity levels and improve your posture. Regular walking will also build up your core strength. Core strength is an important part of maintaining good posture and will help you to maintain better posture during your other daily activities. Here are some simple tips to improve your digestive function. In recent times we have seen a lot more information become available to us regarding the role of digestion and how important it is to have a properly functioning digestive system. Authorities used to say, “you are what you eat” but that has now changed to; “you are what you digest” suggesting our most vital role in optimum health is the proper function of our digestive system. The ancient healing tradition of Ayurveda which has its roots in the vedic culture of India and is over 5000 years old, talks about the digestive system being responsible for the health and wellbeing of an individual. Proper assimilation of food and efficient elimination of waste builds our health but when digestion becomes hampered from a variety of factors, toxins are produced and in turn can lead to disease. Our health and wellbeing depends upon our ability to digest everything we take in from the environment. This includes not only substances like food and drink, but also our experiences, emotions, and the impressions we take in via our sensory portals, namely our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. When our digestive ability is strong, we create healthy tissues and eliminate waste products efficiently. On the other hand, if our digestive ability is weakened through improper eating, lack of activity, negative emotional energy or unhealthy daily routines, our digestion will be hampered and we produce toxins that get stored in the body. According to Ayurveda, this toxic residue, known as ama, is the root cause of disease. So how can we assist our digestive system? Here are a few simple tips that you can incorporate daily. 1. **Do some form of daily movement, whether it is a little yoga every morning, or a daily walk—**A recent study published in [Diabetes Care](http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/early/2013/06/03/dc13-0084.abstract) showed that a short 15-minute walk after each meal helped to control sugar spikes after eating. These short post-meal walks were more effective than taking a longer, 45-minute walk once daily. 2. **Don’t overeat—**When we eat more food than our stomach can accommodate, we cannot properly break it down. We also tend to produce more acid, thus causing reflux and indigestion. In addition, the amount of digestive enzymes produced may not be able to completely break down the volume of food ingested, which leads to more gas formation, discomfort, or bloating. Ayurveda recommends that we leave one-third to one-quarter of our stomach empty to allow space for our body to easily digest our meal. 3. **Sip on ginger tea throughout the day, and with meals.** Ginger is known in Ayurveda as the “universal remedy” due to its many benefits for the body, and it has been used for more than 2,000 years to treat digestive issues. Ginger can relax the smooth muscle of the intestines, thereby relieving symptoms of gas and cramping. A recent study in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that ginger stimulates digestion by speeding up the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, and helps eliminates digestive discomfort after eating. In addition, ginger can stimulate saliva, bile, and gastric enzymes to aid in digestion of the food that has been ingested. The researchers concluded that these beneficial effects are a result of phenolic compounds, primarily gingerol and shogaol, and various other volatile oils that are present in ginger. 4. **Eat your largest meal at lunchtime**—Our bodies are most able to digest food at midday, when we are active. As studies have found, our digestive system secretes the highest concentration of “digestive juices” around noon, making this the best time to eat our largest meal. In the evening, our bodies are slowing down and preparing for sleep. If we eat our biggest meal at dinner, when our digestive fire is weaker, we will feel heavy and bloated and will be more likely to have difficulty falling asleep. 5. **Focus on releasing negative emotions**—you’ve no doubt noticed that your emotions influence your digestion. You may get heartburn when you’re under stress, lose your appetite when you feel sad, or become nauseated or even throw up before a big exam or presentation. A growing body of research is finding that the stress associated with unprocessed negative emotions can inhibit the natural digestive process and lead to chronic digestive issues. Australians spend 10 hours and 24 minutes on average engaging with their mobile devices every day.1 Within five minutes of waking up in the morning 35% of us check our phones, and 70% use phones during mealtimes with family and friends.2 This excessive reliance on digital devices is taking a toll on our bodies. Looking down hunched over mobile devices puts excessive strain on the neck which can cause neck pain. This is a very common complaint – in fact, the chance that you will have neck pain at some point in your lifetime is nearly 50% More and more Australians are suffering from ‘Text Neck’ – this refers to neck pain and damage from looking down at mobile devices for prolonged periods. Staring down at your phone can put immense pressure on your neck and spine. There is no need to shun all technology. Changing a few habits can make a gig difference in improving your spinal health and overall wellbeing. Here are some tips to help avoid text neck and other spinal health issues resulting from poor posture and excessive use of mobile devices: - **Change the way you hold your phone** – bring the screen to eye level so your head is not slouched forward. This way you don’t have to be in a forward-head posture for long periods of time. - **Take regular breaks** from mobile devices. For example, don’t check your phone while commuting. - **Get socia**l with family or friends. Have a ‘no phone policy’ during dinner. You’ll enjoy your meal even more without the distraction! **Chiro Can Help** Stretching can help alleviate neck pain an discomfort caused by text neck. Seek advice from your local CAA chiropractor or other healthcare professional about which stretching exercises are suitable for you. Depending on your circumstances, your chiropractor may suggest a variety of techniques to help improve range of motion and function and will develop a program of care that may combine more than one type of treatment, depending on your needs. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, a care plan may include mobilisation, massage, rehabilitative exercise, as well as dietary and lifestyle advice. We all know that we can go without food for a period of time but we cannot live more than a few days without water. Whilst we all know this simple fact that water is good for us sometimes we need reminding just how good it is and what one simple glass of pure fresh water can do for us. Let’s look at some quick facts… The body is made up of 55 to 75 per cent water.1 Water forms the basis of blood, digestive juices, urine and perspiration, and is contained in lean muscle, fat and bones. As the body can’t store water, we need fresh supplies every day to make up for losses from the lungs, skin, urine and faeces. The amount we need depends on our body size, metabolism, the weather, the food we eat and our activity levels. So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly about 13 cups (3 litres) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is about 9 cups (2.2 litres) of total beverages a day. Many top water experts recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily.2 For example, if you weigh 200 lbs., you would want to drink 100 ounces (about 3 litres) of water daily. This approach takes into consideration differences in weight, which makes more sense. However, other factors may increase water needs. In short without enough water the body literally starts drying up, shutting down and ultimately reducing our capacity to function. Next time you feel foggy in the brain, inability to focus on a task at hand, lethargic or your mood swings to an unpleasant low try drinking a glass of water and allowing its hydrating, flushing and cleansing effects work its magic on your body. Modern life has become so hectic, time seems to have diminished in quantity with every waking hour scheduled on a smart phone, its no wonder we are feeling the pressure. Surprisingly with all the obvious pressures we experience we still find it difficult to acknowledge that we might be stressed. For many of us we think stress has to look and act a certain way and if it doesn’t fit our perception then it doesn’t exist. The truth is, stress is not a one size fits all. Here are some signs that may indicate stress is present. 1. YOU BECOME MORE ANXIOUS Anxiety and stress are two sides of the same coin. Where one is present, the other one will be as well. Physical symptoms of anxiety often include muscle tension, rapid breathing, fast heartbeat, sweating, dizziness and fatigue. Practicing stress-management and relaxation techniques can help in dealing with the anxiety that results from stress. 2. YOU BECOME MORE IMPATIENT People who become more impatient will experience physical signs such a s muscle tension, hand clenching, and shallow breathing. Mental processes can also be affected, causing more irritability, anxiousness and impulsiveness. If you experience symptoms of impatience, you need to find the true cause, or “trigger.” Make a list of things that are causing you to experience impatience and avoid or minimize your contact with these “triggers.” 3. YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER MORE QUICKLY When experiencing a stressful situation, your mental capacity diminishes. When you lose your temper, your anger overwhelms you and results in trouble communicating and often you end up saying things you later regret. You will feel worse about the situation which will add additional stress. Walk away, breathe slowly and deeply or take a quick break. Also having a glass of water at this critical moment will enable better mental function. 4. YOU PROCRASTINATE MORE Procrastination negatively affects both your career and your personal life. The inability to concentrate on what needs to be done results in feeling overwhelmed, resentful and guilty. Procrastination becomes a coping mechanism to deal with the stress, however this mechanism is counterproductive because we often fail to meet our obligations resulting in more stress. Dr. Neil Fiore, author of the book *The Now Habit* suggests that making scheduled time for enjoyment can be an effective way to overcome procrastination. 5. YOU HAVE MORE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS Negative thoughts and a pessimistic outlook are telltale signs of being stressed out. This is a direct result of the chemical changes in the brain when we experience stress. There are two solutions for this problem: not dwelling on negative thoughts and creating a positive mental attitude so that your thoughts are geared towards a positive outlook. 6. YOU ARE IN PAIN OR SICK MORE OFTEN Stress has a negative effect on your body because it causes the body to release more hormones, suppresses the immune system and produces tension in the head and body. Stress also causes tension, which triggers the sympathetic nervous system to reduce blood flow to the muscles. Back aches and pains are often the result as are muscle spasms. The immune system is also suppressed when stress is prevalent. As a result, we are more vulnerable to common colds and flu and likely to become sick. Avoiding stress or simply becoming aware of stress that occurs enables you to deal with it effectively. Deep breathing, mini meditations and taking a break from the situation can help to alleviate or dissipate stress. Remember stress is of no benefit to anyone or anything regardless of how attached you have become to it. Relax and then relax some more, see the big picture and take one positive step at a time towards reducing stress if not doing away with it all together. You can almost go about your entire day and not have to say hello or interact with anyone real anymore. Whilst this may seem appealing to some it doesn’t come without its own set of troubles. Staying connected 24/7 has seen us become more disconnected than ever before. There is no denying that technology has improved the efficiency of the way we do things especially when it comes to business and progressing at a rate we have never seen before. There are many other positive aspects too such as keeping in touch with family and friends, knowing the where a-bouts of your children at any given time or simply being able to contact someone in time of need. Undeniably these are all good things, but as Oscar Wilde famously said “everything in moderation including moderation.” A 2014 Nielsen report found that adults log a total of 11 hours of screen time a day. Here are some of the ways this might be affecting our health **• Vision.** Staring into a screen for extended periods of time can cause “computer vision syndrome.” You’re probably familiar with the symptoms: strained, dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Poor posture can also cause neck and shoulder pain. **• Sleep.** Studies link heavy computer and mobile phone use to more sleep disturbances. University of Gothenburg psychologist Sara Thomée, one study’s lead researcher, says the blue light from digital devices suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, keeping us from having restful sleep. **• Addiction and reward seeking.** Dopamine, the “feel-good hormone,” is part of the brain’s pleasure and reward circuits. Playing video games turns on similar brain regions as those linked to cravings for drugs and gambling, Ditto for social media — every time we see a new post or get a reaction to ours, it’s like a hit of brain candy. **• Weight.** Even two hours of TV a day can increase the risk of weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease in adults. (Computer use doesn’t seem to have as strong a link.) There are probably several factors to blame, including less active time, less sleep, and seeing more ads for unhealthy foods. **• Overall health.** Most of the time we’re on our screens, we’re sitting down. Sitting for hours at a time boosts the risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. One study found that spending more than four hours a day in front of a computer or TV more than doubles your likelihood of dying or being hospitalised for heart disease — and exercise won’t reduce the risk. Here are 5 simple steps to get you started on having a healthy relationship with your device. 1. No devices at the dinner table or at a restaurant. 2. Turn your phone off at least 1 hour before going to bed 3. Set a time limit for social media and stick to it. 4. Do not text or talk about really important issues over the phone. Be face to face. 5. Each year for one week the CAA aims to create awareness about the health of our spine and its direct impact on the overall quality of our life. The World Health Organisation sums up health as, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Having your spine checked regularly by your Chiropractor can assist you in achieving optimal health. Many people are under the impression they need a “pain” in their back or neck to see a Chiropractor but often waiting until a reasonable level of pain has manifested means the issue has gone on for too long. Waiting until pain arises only adds fuel to a situation that is already quite uncomfortable. You can avoid this frustrating and inconvenient situation and reduce the amount of time taken off work by having regular Chiropractic checkups. You may think whats the point; I don’t have any pain now, but how many times do you hear someone say; “I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary, I just got into the car the way I always do and then I felt this huge amount of pain.” I’m sure you can relate to the above statement. Most people who experience some form of back or neck pain weren’t doing anything strenuous or out of the ordinary and yet it resulted in a huge amount of discomfort and time off work. It is like the straw that broke the camels back. Excuse the pun. This happens generally speaking because the person has had an underlying issue for some time, they could be predisposed to a condition or they have ignored all of the body’s signals alerting them that something is not quite right. Human nature shows us we keep going until we are forced to stop. What if we took the initiative of having our spines checked regularly before pain was the result? Just like we go to the Dentist for our check ups assuming that nothing is wrong we just need a good routine scale and clean and that is with our own regular cleaning. Why not approach your spine in the same way and have a routine chiropractic check up and learn how to “floss and clean” your spine on a daily basis. The age old saying “Prevention is better than cure” by Desiderius Arasmus stands true to this day. If you are already in routine chiropractic care and know the benefits please spread the word and tell a friend. Spinal awareness week is from the 22nd -28th May 2017. **Categories:** Uncategorised **Tags:** back pain, CAA, spinal health week --- ### [Spinal Health Week 21st - 27th May 2018](http://thechiropractor.com.au/spinal-health-week-21st-27th-may-2018/) **Published:** May 23, 2018 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** **HOW OFTEN DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR SPINE???** Spinal health is something we only pay attention to when we are in pain. The spine is a very important part of your body and its health can have a big impact on how well the rest of your body’s functions perform. Spinal health issues, even subtle ones, can affect your general outlook of life and overall wellbeing. Poor spinal health can be caused by a variety of lifestyle factors such as insufficient exercise, sedentary lifestyle, bad posture or poor sleeping habits. **How big is the problem?** According to the recently published Global Burden of Disease study, musculoskeletal conditions have the fourth greatest impact on the health of the world’s population. Poor spinal health can manifest in various ways such as neck pain, backache and headaches, and they contribute substantially to the disease burden within the Australian population. **Discover how chiropractors can help improve your quality of life** Many people don’t think about visiting a chiropractor or being proactive about their spinal health until they are faced with an injury or pain. They typically seek care for existing conditions, and don’t see chiropractic as a preventative healthcare option. Chiropractic can help address current spinal health concerns and also help you discover preventative measures. **Educated and regulated.** Australian chiropractors are highly qualified healthcare professionals who study at university for a minimum of five years. They are also government registered and regulated. **Non-invasive and drug free approach** Chiropractors use a variety of non-surgical techniques such as spinal adjustments and manual therapy to address spinal health issues. --- Click on the link below to watch a short video that will help you understand more about your spine and how Chiropractic may benefit you. Despite this, it can be challenging to find time to walk in a busy day. Whether it’s our family, work, studies or other commitments vying for our attention, sometimes we need to be creative in how we incorporate walking into our daily life. Here are some ideas on how you can incorporate walking into your daily life. **Commute** While it may be too far to walk the whole way to work or school, it is possible to make walking part of the journey. If you take public transport, you could try walking to the station rather than driving and parking. For those that drive, it could be as simple as parking further from your destination. **Lunch time** Instead of working through your lunch break, why not utilise the time and go for a walk? You might be surprised at the great walks nearby. You could even invite a friend or colleague to join you. A lunch time walk may even reenergise you for the afternoon and stop you reaching for caffeinated drinks or sweets. **Socialising** While we often catch up with friends and family over a meal or drink, why not over a walk? Walking is a great activity for socialising and you can even reward yourself afterwards by walking to a desired destination such as a shop or cafe. Not only is walking a great way to get active and improve both your mental and physical wellbeing, it is also a simple way that you can look after your spinal health. Walking just 30 minutes a day can help you to maintain and improve your health. Pillow options are changing swiftly due to the many pillow brands in the market and the upping technology. Choosing the best pillow is the best thing you can do besides choosing a good mattress to enhance comfort in bed. Given that we spend almost a third of our lives in bed, you cannot underestimate your comfort. 1. The Complete Sleeper pillow is what we sell here at The Chiropractor North Sydney. It is recommended throughout Australia by Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, and many more health professionals. It is regarded as the perfect memory foam cervical neck support pillow. With its multiple adjustability options and unique ability to suit many different body shapes. Therapeutic Pillow international, the makers of the Complete Sleeper are proud to be Australian made & Australian owned. **Benefits of using a memory foam contoured pillow** - The Complete Sleeper features ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ sides as well as contour variance for maximum individual support and comfort for side or back sleeping. The pillow’s clever design encourages side sleeping which enhances breathing, which may also be helpful in minimizing light snoring. Scalloped under-edges allow shoulder when side sleeping to slip snugly under pillow. - Head and neck are cushioned and supported during sleep. - Designed to help alleviate and avoid neck and shoulder stress and muscle stiffness in both ‘new’ and ‘old’ injuries. - Foam ‘noodles’ in corefoam surface can be removed to make for an even softer surface. - May assist asthma sufferers and others who require clear breathing patterns. - Pillow’s contour may help minimise light snoring by enhancing the airway through encouraging better spinal alignment - Channels in the corefoam surface, combined with the open-weave inner cover, allow air to circulate, for cooler, healthier sleep - Memory Foam … “feeling is believing” - Created for the NASA, Memory Foam is temperature sensitive and responds to your body’s warmth. It moulds and shapes to your neck and head for optimum comfort and support. - Memory foam (technical term visco elastic) has a modified cellular makeup which gives it unique temperature-sensitive qualities (softens slightly in contact with body warmth). It is also known for its soft and pliable feel, and pressure-diffusion properties. 2 - Pillows do have a use by date so if you are feeling uncomfortable whilst sleeping or you know your pillow has seen better days then maybe itÆs time for an upgrade. Regardless of specific business, offices share many similarities. One such similarity is a sedentary culture and studies show all that sitting is taking a major toll on employee health. Sitting is shortening your life – From the driver’s seat to the office chair and then the couch at home, human beings are spending more time seated than ever, and researchers say it’s wreaking havoc on our bodies. The *Los Angeles Times* recently interviewed Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative and inventor of the treadmill desk. Levine has been studying the adverse effects of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles for years and has summed up his findings in two sentences. > “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” Levine is credited with coining that mantra – “sitting is the new smoking” – but he’s not the only one who believes it. Researchers have found and continue to find evidence that prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing several serious illnesses like various types of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. In conclusion try to limit the amount of time spent sitting down. If you need to sit for prolonged amounts of time set an alarm that makes you get up every 20-30 minutes and move your body. Increase the blood flow to your brain by taking a quick walk or simply doing a series of gentle stretches. You will find that you will function better throughout the day and for longer. While I was certain that I did not want to become a medical doctor, I remained unsure of which specific path to pursue. ### Discovering Chiropractic At the age of sixteen, I met a Chiropractor, an encounter that ignited my curiosity and ultimately led me to enrol in the Sydney College of Chiropractic in 1990. My early experiences in the field, particularly my exposure to the Gonstead System of Chiropractic, shaped my understanding and appreciation for the precision and power of a well-executed chiropractic adjustment. ### Professional Development After graduating in 1994, I began practicing in various clinics across Australia, taking on locum relief positions. In 1997, I travelled to the United Kingdom to practice in central London. In July 2000, I established The Chiropractor at North Sydney and have been dedicated to building the practice ever since. ### Academic Contributions Between 2000 and 2016, I served as a tutor and lecturer in the Gonstead Technique at Macquarie University, and also lectured at Central Queensland University. Since 2020, I have been a member of the Academic Board at the Australian College of Chiropractic, contributing to the Program Development Committee and continuing to lecture in Gonstead Technique. ### Leadership and Teaching ### ![](http://thechiropractor.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/The-CHIROPRACTOR-North-Sydney-Andrew-Stevenson-04.jpg) My commitment to continued education and professional growth is reflected in my involvement with the Gonstead Chiropractic Society (Aust), where I am a Fellow and former President, and regularly teach classes and workshops throughout Australia. I hold an Advanced Certificate in Extremities from GCS(Aust), with a particular interest in treating extremity joint conditions. ### Sports Chiropractic In 2003, I earned a Graduate Certificate in Sports Chiropractic from RMIT, and I remain passionate about nurturing the athletic potential in every patient. ### Personal Interests and Activities ### ![](http://thechiropractor.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/The-Chirpractor-Staff-2017-Andrew-Stevenson-05.jpg) I am a strong believer in living life to the fullest through an active lifestyle, and I maintain a deep interest in sports. After finishing school, I started an exercise and sports science degree – not knowing much about Chiropractic at all I found myself continuously being drawn to the spine and its impact on the communication between the brain and the rest of the body; which is where my Chiropractic journey began. I completed a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science degree and a Master of Chiropractic degree both at Macquarie University. However, right here at The Chiropractor at North Sydney as a Chiropractic assistant was where I found a passion for the Gonstead System of Chiropractic. My interest for the Gonstead system has grown over the years and I cannot wait to put all that I have learnt into practice. When I’m not in the clinic treating patients you will most likely find me playing oztag, swimming or spending time with my family. Here at The Chiropractor at North Sydney I aim to deepen my knowledge and understanding so that I can assist in making positive changes to everyone’s health care journeys. I hope to facilitate individuals in achieving their goals through all aspects of life. I grew up being exposed to Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Homeopathy from a young age which has awakened my interest in alternative health care. I started and completed a physiotherapy degree believing that this was the right path for me. Realising that physiotherapy did not satisfy my goals I entered into Chiropractic degree in Australia. During my studies in Australia I have attended multiple Seminars refining my Chiropractic skills and techniques including Gonstead, Activator Technique and BGI. I have experienced various Chiropractic techniques on myself and applied them in practice but found the most profound result using the Gonstead analysis and approach. My mission is to continuously learn and deepen my knowledge so that I can treat every patient as an individual and do everything I can to help him or her to reach their optimum health. A healthy nervous system and spine assist the body to work at its best, regardless of the age and condition. In my free time I love to travel, spent time in nature, play tennis and do yoga. I can speak multiple European languages. Australia is my favourite country, because of the great people and beautiful nature and lifestyle. Growing up in a health-conscious household, I was introduced to natural and holistic approaches to care, which continue to shape my perspective on health and wellbeing. Years of competitive sport—including hockey, football, strength training, strongman, and the Highland Games—further developed my interest in the human body. Through training and competition, I became increasingly interested in biomechanics, recovery, and the role of the spine and nervous system in function and performance. That interest naturally led me to chiropractic. I was drawn to its hands-on, problem-solving approach and find great fulfilment in helping people recover, move more freely, and achieve their goals. While studying chiropractic, I was introduced to a range of techniques, but the Gonstead system consistently stood out for its results. That became even clearer during my time practising in New Zealand and ultimately motivated my move to Australia to further immerse myself in the Gonstead community and work with the Gonstead chiropractors at The Chiropractor at North Sydney. I believe a healthy spine and nervous system are essential to overall wellbeing, and that every person deserves care tailored to their individual needs. It is through the Gonstead System of chiropractic, I have dedicated my career to helping each individual achieve the best possible outcome. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[/spb\_accordion\] \[spb\_button button\_text=”BOOK ONLINE” button\_size=”standard” button\_colour=”accent” button\_type=”standard” rounded=”yes” button\_dropshadow=”no” button\_link=”https://book.nookal.com/bookings/book/de3E787b-9708-E884-8466-Fb8ea703a4ae/location” button\_target=”\_blank” align=”left” animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[/spb\_column\] \[/spb\_row\] \[spb\_row element\_name=”Row” wrap\_type=”content-width” parallax\_image\_height=”content-height” parallax\_image\_movement=”fixed” parallax\_image\_speed=”0.5″ bg\_video\_loop=”yes” parallax\_video\_height=”window-height” parallax\_video\_overlay=”none” row\_overlay\_opacity=”0″ row\_col\_pos=”default” minimize\_row=”no” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_column col\_sm=”4″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/3″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[/spb\_column\] \[/spb\_row\] \[spb\_row element\_name=”Row” wrap\_type=”content-width” parallax\_image\_height=”content-height” parallax\_image\_movement=”fixed” parallax\_image\_speed=”0.5″ bg\_video\_loop=”yes” parallax\_video\_height=”window-height” parallax\_video\_overlay=”none” row\_overlay\_opacity=”0″ row\_col\_pos=”default” minimize\_row=”no” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_column col\_sm=”4″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/3″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[/spb\_column\] \[/spb\_row\] --- ### [What To Expect](http://thechiropractor.com.au/what-to-expect/) **Published:** April 4, 2017 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ custom\_css=”margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;” border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] ## Your First Steps Towards Better Health Visiting a chiropractor for the first time can feel like a big step, so we make sure you know exactly what to expect. Your chiropractor will then ask a number of other questions to gain a greater understanding of your health concerns. If yours is a chiropractic case, you will then taken through a thorough examination to identify any **subluxations**. The examination will include: - Postural Evaluation - Skin temperature Differential Instrumentation - Static/Motion Palpation - Orthopaedic testing - Neurological testing - Muscle strength/length analysis - Specific Chiropractic tests and procedures Following your examination, x-rays may be required. X-rays are taken for several reasons including: - To determine if there is any degeneration - To locate potential problem areas - To determine the condition of the discs (cushions between each vertebrae) - To rule out other pathologies (disease) Digital X-rays are taken on location to ensure a high standard and the correct images being taken. The most common cause of sustaining a subluxation is through physical trauma, however, emotional and chemical influences can also cause subluxations to occur. Physical trauma such as whiplash, falls and incorrect lifting techniques can upset the normal biomechanics of your spine resulting in abnormal nerve function and pain. When these subluxations are detected in your spine and are the cause of your problem, a chiropractic adjustment will benefit your symptoms. However, not all subluxations will cause symptoms and or pain, which is why many of our patients will have periodic appointments to assess the health of their spine, similar to dental check ups. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”What is an adjustment and does it hurt? ” accordion\_id=”what-is-an-adjustment-and-does-it-hurt–” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] The adjustment is a quick shallow thrust into the spine or extremity joint which generally does not hurt. It is similar to cracking your own knuckles, except the chiropractic adjustment specifically returns the joint to neutral to restore normal biomechanics or movement to the joint. When you crack your knuckles this is a manipulation, the adjustment is a very specific form of manipulation that is done for the benefit of the one being adjusted. Just as you would never have the tyre alignment on your car manipulated you would have it adjusted into better alignment. A great deal of care goes into identifying which segment needs to be adjusted and which direction it needs to be adjustment in. Often there is swelling associated with a subluxation, we recommend people apply ice post adjustment to reduce this swelling and therefore reduce any discomfort that may be experienced following the adjustment. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”What should I expect after an adjustment?” accordion\_id=”what-should-i-expect-after-an-adjustment-” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ custom\_css=”margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;border-top: 0px ;border-left: 0px ;border-right: 0px ;border-bottom: 0px ;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;” border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] The normal response to an adjustment is an improvement in spinal or joint motion. Once the ‘sticky’ joint is working again, there is usually an associated reduction in muscle spasm, swelling and associated symptoms. Initial improvement may only be temporary until the body has had sufficient time to heal. More chronic cases may require several adjustments before improvements are noted. Once sustained improvement is achieved, the frequency of treatment is gradually reduced until the joint has stabilized. A small percentage of patients do experience some post-treatment soreness that will usually resolve within 24-48 hours. Some patients also report feeling worse before improvements become obvious, particularly when the problem has been long standing. If your Chiropractor is not achieving the improvements they expect, they may refer you for a medical opinion or to a more suitable specialist. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”How many adjustments will I need?” accordion\_id=”how-many-adjustments-will-i-need-” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] It is impossible to predict the number of visits any one will need. There are many factors that contribute to how rapidly someone heals: length of time of injury, previous damage, degree of damage, general health, lifestyle choices, whether they continue to aggravate the damaged area. At The Chiropractor at North Sydney and with all Gonstead Chiropractors, the emphasis on treatment is to return the maximum amount of function and symptomatic relief to the patient in the shortest time their bodies healing capacity will allow. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”Who should be checked for subluxations? ” accordion\_id=”who-should-be-checked-for-subluxations–” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] In short – anyone with a spine! We provide treatment for all ages, from infants to the elderly. Children’s spines, like adults, are subjected to trauma, in fact children are continually subjected to traumas right from the birth process – going through the birth canal, unsupported head and neck movements, frequent falls, learning to walk. This trauma is transmitted as force to the children’s spines causing subluxations. All children are advised to have a spinal assessment, but healthy spines will not require any adjustments or treatment. Early detection of problems leads to a much better prognosis. We do not x-ray children unless indicated. Throughout life we sustain injuries causing subluxations from playing sport, car accidents and falls which need to be corrected. Early detection and correction can prevent years of future problems. As people get older they have normally sustained injuries to their spines or extremities from the many physical, chemical or emotional stresses they have sustained. Chiropractic is safe and effective for older people, the adjustment acting to re-lubricate the joints, similar to a grease and oil change for your car. Therefore everyone and anyone should have their spine checked to assess for subluxations from birth right up until old age. The Gonstead technique is adapted to suit the age and health concerns of all types of patients. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”Do I need a referral from my medical doctor to see a chiropractor? ” accordion\_id=”do-i-need-a-referral-from-my-medical-doctor-to-see-a-chiropractor–” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] No. You do not need a referral from your GP because Chiropractors are considered primary health care practitioners. However, we do accept Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) and Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Program patients who have a Referral from their GP for Allied Health Services under Medicare. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”Can I adjust myself?” accordion\_id=”can-i-adjust-myself-” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] Unfortunately, we are not able to adjust ourselves. An adjustment is a specific thrust delivered to a joint that has been prepositioned from the subluxated position, back to neutral, which repositions the vertebra back on top of the disc. The adjustment is not just the popping noise you hear when you pull on your fingers, these noises as we discussed earlier relate to the release of gas from the synovial fluid. Andrew has his spine regularly checked and adjusted by other Gonstead Chiropractors. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[/spb\_accordion\_tab\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”Chiropractic Care – Risks and Benefits” accordion\_id=”chiropractic-care—risks-and-benefits” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] Chiropractic adjustment of the spine has stood the test of time as one of the most effective and safe treatments for neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Research shows that Chiropractic care is more effective and economical and also gives longer lasting results than other forms of health care. However, as with all health care procedures there is a risk of injury or complication. In nearly all cases of injury, the patient had a pre-existing condition. That is, the patient had a pre-existing pathology, such as bone cancer or osteoporosis or a disc prolapse, and the condition was not correctly diagnosed and an inappropriate technique was performed, putting the patient at risk. A thorough examination and x-ray series, and a very controlled and specific adjustment are necessary to prevent such injuries. A specific list of the risks involved: 1. 1 in 3 patients experience temporary soreness. This is normal, since the body has to become accustomed to the changes occurring in the spine. 2. Strains and sprains to the soft tissues such as ligaments, muscles or tendons are uncommon. 3. Injury to the disc between each vertebra is very uncommon. 1:62,000 in low back cases and 1:139,000 in neck cases. In some of these cases nerve compression by the disc can occur, resulting in pain, numbness and muscle weakness. 4. Bone fracture is rare and has occurred only in cases where the patient has had osteoporosis or bone cancer, and the adjustive technique was inappropriate. 5. Stroke due to neck adjustment is exceedingly rare, the most recent estimate being between 1:2,000,000 and 1:5,850,000 (To put it into perspective, the risk of getting struck by lightning in Australia is 1:1,500,000). In fact, it is so rare that the latest studies indicate it is most likely coincidence. The force of a neck adjustment upon the arteries supplying the head is about nine times less than the force needed to damage an artery. Furthermore, the forces involved in merely turning your head to check your blind-spot when driving can exceed those of a neck adjustment. However, a rare number of people may have a connective-tissue disorder that can weaken the arteries. Such persons may be at greater risk of injury even when checking blind-spot whilst driving or washing their hair in a basin, than the normal population. **CHIROPRACTIC CARE is considerably safer than usual medical and surgical treatments for benign spinal conditions.** 1. Drugs and surgery are the third biggest cause of death second only to cancer and heart disease. 2. Neck surgery has a risk of complication in 3-4/100 cases, which leads to death in 4-10/1000. 3. The risk of complication from using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is 1:25. The risk of death from their use is 1:250 (360 Australians and 3200 Americans die each year due to their use). Chiropractic care has been shown to be 250 times safer than the use of anti-inflammatory drugs for the same conditions. References: 1. Meade TW, Dyer S, Browne W, Townsend J, Frank AO. > *“A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.”* > > ***The WHO definition*** > *World Health Organization, Guidelines on Chiropractic, 2005* With the main focus of chiropractic being on the spine, many people think chiropractors can only help with problems such as back pain, neck pain and headaches. And while it’s true that chiropractors can often help people with pain, there is so much more to chiropractic than just treating pain. Chiropractic care is really about total health and wellbeing. It’s about helping people to feel great, and get the most out of life by functioning at their optimal potential. \[/spb\_text\_block\] \[spb\_blank\_spacer height=”30px” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiF5YLwxFs&feature=youtu.be” remove\_related=”yes” autoplay=”no” full\_width=”no” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_row element\_name=”About Chiropractic” wrap\_type=”full-width-contained” row\_bg\_type=”color” row\_bg\_color=”#ffffff” color\_row\_height=”content-height” bg\_image=”16278″ bg\_type=”cover” parallax\_image\_height=”content-height” parallax\_image\_movement=”fixed” parallax\_image\_speed=”standard” bg\_video\_loop=”yes” parallax\_video\_height=”window-height” row\_id=”about-chiropractic” row\_name=”About Chiropractic” row\_top\_style=”none” row\_bottom\_style=”none” parallax\_video\_overlay=”none” row\_overlay\_opacity=”0″ remove\_element\_spacing=”no” row\_col\_spacing=”0″ row\_col\_pos=”default” row\_col\_equal\_heights=”no” row\_expanding=”no” row\_animation=”none” row\_animation\_delay=”0″ minimize\_row=”yes” simplified\_controls=”no” custom\_css\_percentage=”yes” custom\_css=”margin-top: 0%;margin-bottom: 0%;padding-top: 2%;padding-bottom: 4%;” border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_accordion width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] \[spb\_accordion\_tab title=”What is Gonstead?” accordion\_id=”what-is-gonstead-” icon=””\] \[spb\_text\_block animation=”none” animation\_delay=”0″ simplified\_controls=”yes” custom\_css\_percentage=”no” padding\_vertical=”0″ padding\_horizontal=”0″ margin\_vertical=”0″ custom\_css=”margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;” border\_size=”0″ border\_styling\_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el\_position=”first last”\] ![](http://thechiropractor.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/The-Chiropractor-Dr-Gonstead-225x300.jpg) Chiropractic began with Daniel D. Palmer giving his first adjustment in September 1895 in Davenport, Iowa. Today, there are many methods used by chiropractors to correct spinal misalignments, joint dysfunctions and subluxation complexes. Many techniques are identified by the name of the person who was most instrumental in their development. One of the most widely utilised techniques is the Gonstead System.1 Dr Gonstead developed his procedures as a result of extensive clinical research in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. These procedures were developed over many years of clinical observation and research to work out how to get sick patients well. Doctor Gonstead’s fifty-five years of continuous practice and over four million chiropractic adjustments resulted in the most complete method of biomechanical analysis available for use by today’s doctors of chiropractic. Many of Dr Gonstead’s clinical approaches, theories and results are now being explained by modern scientific research and studies. Dr Gonstead was asked by other chiropractors to teach them what he did and how he got the results that he did. This lead to the development of the Gonstead Seminar in the mid 1940’s and a systematic approach to explaining the way he practiced and got sick patients well. A full history of the Gonstead Seminar is available at www.gonsteadseminar.com. The Gonstead System is taught in many Chiropractic schools around the world. In Australasia Gonstead programs are taught at Macquarie University (Sydney) were Dr Andrew Stevenson has been teaching Gonstead since 1999, RMIT (Melbourne) and New Zealand College of Chiropractic (Auckland). The Gonstead Chiropractic Society runs several seminars a year in Australia and New Zealand and conducts regular workshops for Chiropractors and students to further their skill and knowledge of the Gonstead System. The Gonstead Seminar has presented annually in Australia since 1990. The Gonstead Chiropractor conducts a thorough analysis of your spine using a variety of tools to detect the presence segmental spinal dysfunction known as the vertebral subluxation complex.1 ###### 1. **Team Categories:** Staff --- ### [Dr Veronika Schroeder](http://thechiropractor.com.au/team/veronika-schroeder-2/) **Published:** April 10, 2017 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** BChiroSc, MChiro, Dip Physio (Ger) I have always been interested in health and vitality and I am passionate to help others to live a healthier life. I am very grateful to be able to work with Andrew and Sunday and to help my current and future patients. - Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) - Bachelor of Chiropractic Science (BChiroSc) - Physiotherapy Diploma (DipPhysio) Germany **Team Categories:** Staff --- ### [Dr Amy Nguyen](http://thechiropractor.com.au/team/dr-amy-nguyen/) **Published:** April 27, 2023 **Author:** Sunny **Content:** From a young age I knew that a being in the health industry was where I wanted to be. I did not know what that profession was but I knew I did not want to be a medical doctor. My journey in Chiropractic began by meeting a Chiropractor at the age of 16. This meeting sparked my interest and I enrolled in Chiropractic at the Sydney College of Chiropractic in 1990. My early influences in Chiropractic lead me to become interested and study the Gonstead System of Chiropractic. This is where I truly learnt the power of a Chiropractic adjustment, in the right place, the right direction and the right time. ![The Chiropractor North Sydney](http://thechiropractor.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/the-chiropractor-xray-3.jpg) After graduating in 1994 I began working in private practices all around Australia doing locum relief work.
